This film was originally inspired by Italian painter Giorgio de Chirico and the Italian movement of metaphysical painting in the late 1910s. The timeless feelings of desolation, depicted by these artists, are transferred into film and to a dreamy night-time world in Helsinki almost 100 years later.

“The romantic ‘The Mystery and the Melancholy of a Street’ is reminiscent of Eino Ruutsalo’s early 1950’s studies of desolate nighttime views of downtown Helsinki.”
